"The most important
part of a yoga practice
is the pauses,
the silences and the watching.
BODY AWARENESS PUTS US IN TOUCH WITH OUR INNER WORLD. THE LANDSCAPE OF OUR ORGANISM.
Through the development of this awareness we gain knowledge,
and then we start to poses the power and the freedom of choice."
My first meeting with yoga was in 2002 in my hometown in Norway. It was at a point in my life when I felt somehow out of place and my life lacked a certain sense of direction. I started to attend a weekly yoga class at my local yoga center and found quickly that it gave me some sense of joy and connection. As I had no further plans with my life at that time, my yoga teacher suggested to me (and subtly and gently nudged me) to attend the four month Yogic Certificate Course in the Bihar School of Yoga in India. I had no real idea of what I was going for, but I accepted the suggestion, naively and optimistically packed my bags and all alone got on a plain to Bihar, India. An event that showed itself to be a lot more challenging than I had anticipated, but which should also change my life and myself and open the door to a life long journey.
Despite the challenges however, i also found there great experiences of happiness, connection, peace and a feeling of having come home. For those four months we lived the yogic lifestyle, from 4am to 9pm, worked through the days with cleaning and peeling potatoes and of course learned a lot about the sciences of yoga.
Although challenging, and of course a continuous work in progress, the yogic life style resonated strongly with me and I had gained an experience of myself at a whole other level - more awake, more inspired, more kind and helpful to others, and more open and willing to fully take part in whatever showed up as the task of the moment. A great ability to be involved in life as it presented itself, fully and joyfully. The experience gave me both inspiration and a thirst to continue. Continue my development and my knowledge of yoga.
I stay within the tradition of the Bihar School of Yoga, Satyananda Yoga, for a few reasons. Obviously, that is where I started and that first experience will always have a special place in my heart. I also really appreciate the approach of Satyananda Yoga. It is systematic, understandable and teaches yoga as a whole - all forms and branches of yoga and how to apply them in life.
Another reason is the depth and authenticity of the tradition with sincere dedication from Swami Satyananda Saraswati, his successor Swami Niranjananda Saraswati, and many other very good, inspiring and knowledgeable teachers in India and around the world.
It is nice to be in a lineage of people who were so devoted to what they did and to be able to pass it on to others.
I look forward to share the joys of Yoga with you!
